The Bristol Schools and Caribbean Heritage Project involved local school communities and heritage partners in exploring and celebrating the rich heritage of Caribbean folk tales and Bristol’s links to that heritage. The culmination of which was a live performance of the story of Anansi and Mr. Snake, set to audio, featuring the voices of participating children and elders of the Caribbean community. The Performance took place at Rose Green Centres annual bonfire event on the 5th November 2022.

All stages of the project – research, development, interpretation script writing audio recording and performance were undertaken with professional artists, schools, parents and members of the community.

The project involved two Bristol Schools (150 children across 5 Year 4 classes), Malcom X Elders, a professional drummer, a visual artist, a sound engineer and volunteers from the Rose green centre.

By facilitating opportunities for creative engagement with local heritage and the acquisition of local Heritage skills the project has begun to disseminate understanding and widen recognition of West Indian heritage to participating children and communities.
