The project was funded by West Lindsey District Council, Children in Need and DJS Arts

Young people began by developing the idea for the script, ‘The Demand’, a dark thriller based on the kidnapping of a young boy. Neil the scriptwriter took the YP through a series of exercises to develop the plot, characters, locations and plenty of twists and turns!

Once the script was created, sessions took place to look at CV writing and interview skills, as well as looking at the roles in a theatre company. Five assistant roles were recruited for, to provide support for the professional team and to give YP an insight into particular roles and provide leadership opportunities.

Young people then worked with the designer to develop locations and ideas for the theatre set and costumes for each character. They undertook 2 days making at the theatre to create and paint the set, learning new practical skills as well as shopping for props, managing a small budget.

They worked with the Director to develop character profiles to support a casting process.

They attended casting in Manchester and gave feedback about the actors’ suitability for the role.

They worked to develop a marketing plan and design for posters and leaflets, as well as looking at how a Press Release is created. Once the posters were printed, YP took them around the town promoting the play.

The actors and Director were resident in Gainsborough for a 9-day rehearsal period which young people attended elements of giving their feedback to the actors.

At every stage of the work, young people were involved.
