Funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation

Oracy in early years and KS1 education is vital for a child’s overall development. It enhances communication skills, builds confidence, promotes social and emotional growth, and helps to improve listening skills. All invaluable tools for both their academic and everyday life.

Thanks to funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation we’re able to deliver a 3-year project supporting oracy development in early years through a creative curriculum approach.

The pupils of Ashley Down Primary, Cabot Primary, and Cotham Gardens Primary in Bristol are working with professional artists across 2 terms to develop an audio play, co-created with a professional writer, a drama specialist, and an audio editor/designer.

The schools will decide on the themes themselves, taking inspiration from the interests of the children, and working with the professionals to craft their ideas into an original audio play.

By spreading the project over 3 years we can spend a significant amount of time in each school, making sure the outcomes suit their individual oracy aims. Alongside the benefits of increased self-esteem, literacy, and listening skills, this project provides a truly creative way for children to express themselves and explore their story-telling abilities.
